Conditions Deteriorating

I got a phone call at 6:02 this morning. It was a female computer voice. Halting, but chipper.

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to snow, school will be starting two hours late."

I snuggled back into bed. I have dreamy flannel sheets. Five minutes later the phone rang again. It was the same voice.

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to snow, school will be starting two hours late."

Yep, got that message. I burrowed. Around 6:30 the phone rang again. Same voice.

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to snow, school will be starting...." I HEARD!

Sometime before 7:00, I saw a different name on the caller I.D. This time Central Kitsap school district. Yes, we have two school districts residing in one house. Long story, but same computer voice.

"This is the Central Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to snow, school will be starting two hours late."

Relief. Everyone can sleep in. The phone rang again.

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to apologize if you are getting repeated phone calls." Could have done without the apology. Fifteen minutes later.....

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to deteriorating conditions, school will be cancelled."

Fine. The phone rang again.

"This is the North Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to deteriorating conditions, school........" YEP, I GOT IT!

Lyle left for work and I imagined the grief and righteous indignation of the Central Kitsap students when once again the phone rang.

"This is the Central Kitsap school district calling to inform you that due to deteriorating conditions, school will be cancelled."

And so this is what my bed looked like this morning.

And this is my entryway.

Because if I heard the message right, due to deteriorating conditions, it's a SNOW DAY!

My boys are having their second snow day. I am forcing them to go outside today to burn off some energy. Yesterday they couldn't get enough of the snow, but they are over it today.

We had to call our school district to find out if our schools are closed or not. I'll take that over all those phone calls.

LOL. I'd have probably needed to have words with the North Kitsap school district after all those phone calls. :)
Hurray for a snow day though!

I hate this computer message thing. We got our first call at 5:50, and I couldn't get back to sleep. The CKSD owes me an hour of sleep!

I'm undecided over the entire automated call thing with the schools...it's nice that they are trying hard to make things convenient for us...but don't you miss that anticipation of waiting for your school's name to be called out in the roll call on morning radio? I totally remember..."Totino-Grace, public and parochial, Mahtomedi, public and parochial, Minnehaha Academy..." YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! YEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!

The computer voice is just such a bore. :)

Last Tuesday, with my sophomore already at her early-morning seminary class, I received a call at 6:50 announcing that our district was canceling school. We get the actual recorded voice of the superintendent! (The official name is "snow day," but out here in Iowa we don't often cancel due to snow. I prefer to call them "ice days.") As if to make up for the late notice last week, today they let school out early in anticipation of another freezing rain. Six hours later, it still hasn't arrived. The jury is still out as to whether we will have one more day of school, or whether our winter break has already begun.

Yikes! They are overly prepared aren't they? Do they have directions to make sure each family gets 65 reminders in case it wasn't clear the first time?? Yea for a snow day!!

I loved snow days when I was growing up. Snow days were the BEST!!!!!!!!!! However, now I live down south......which is a really nice thing most of the time, but our kids never get to experience the excitement of finding out school has been canceled because of snow.

Tornadoes, yes. Snow days, no.

Enjoy your winter wonderland!
